Polish Change: Milani in Lemongello

I bought Milani in Lemongello mostly because it reminded me of a joke from back in the day. You know the joke where the woman named her twins after lemon and orange Jell-0? Am I the only one who heard that?

Spotlight on Blue: Wet N Wild in Blue Wants to be a Millionaire

Ok, first of all, this weekend I went to CVS and bought four new bottles of blue polish. I actually had $15 in CVS ExtraCare and Beauty Bucks. Of course, I put all of that towards new polish- that's what its for, isn't it??? LOL.

One of the colors that I picked up while perusing through the CVS by Greenbriar Mall (thumbs down for the Essie and Orly selection at that location BTW) was a pretty sparkly light blue shade by Wet n Wild called "Blue Wants to be a Millionaire." It was so pretty and happy in the bottle that I had to have it.

Wow! This is a Pretty Purple

My family and I are in Valdosta visiting my hubby's family. Before we left to come here, I grabbed probably about 10 different bottles of polish because I desperately needed wanted to do both my hands and feet. I couple of weeks ago, I found some more of the Revlon Scented Polish and picked up "Grape Icy" since I have been looking for shades of purple.

A Great Wedding Color...And More Polish Finds

So the last time I went to Sally's, I stumbled upon several Orly nail polishes that were on clearance. One of the colors was Pink Whisper. This is a great wedding manicure shade for those of you who are looking for a traditional, demure color for your hands. I know that some are looking for more colorful shades but I know when I got married my preference was towards those nude or light shades. Check it out:

I'm Officially Grown! (Shout Out to My Mom)

So I finally did it! After almost 35 years of life, I am finally rocking a shade of red on my nails!

You may remember in my post, Too Young For Red, (if you didn't see it, click here) that I mentioned that I have never worn red polish. Being raised that red polish is for grown ups, I definitely had an aversion to the color. And even when I finally reached adulthood, I still steered clear of red. I still don't know why though. Maybe I've been trying to stay young- naaahhh I'm way too grown and sexy for that... Or maybe it's that I've been trying to avoid being like my mother and her perfectly polished red nails that she rocked as I was growing up... Yeah, that's probably more like it. I don't know about you but for many years I tried my best not to be like my mother. I think many daughters can probably relate to that statement. But as I get older, I realize that being like her is not all that bad. In fact, my mom was pretty fly back then...and still is....

So even though when I saw her on Saturday at my daughter's softball game, she was rocking the ever so soft OPI in Privacy Please, I dedicate this post to my mother who back in the 80's was the Queen of Red. Here's to you, Mom! Orly in Moonlit Madness (yeah, Im not really sure what it has to do with red, either).

This is like a cranberry red with a shine to it. Surprisingly, I like it. What do you think?

I think red is a power color- it says you mean business. But it also says I'm a lady. I guess that's what my mother understood back in the day. I love that dichotomy since power and being a lady are traditionally not supposed to go together.  I have a new respect for red. Red says "Boss Lady"...and  I love, love, love that....And my mom is dope for recognizing that back in the day.

BTW I picked this up at Sally's for $1.99 on clearance along with three Orly other shades- Honeymoon in Style, Razzle and Pink Whisper!! So excited!...Besos, P&P.

What Color Looks Good on Me?

As we get ready for spring and summer, many of us are experimenting with colors for our fingers and toes. Although we would like to believe that all colors look great on all skin tones, we have to keep it real. Come on now, we know that some colors just don't look right on all skin tones. This month's Allure magazine tries to point us in the right direction.

First of all, guess which color is flattering for everyone regardless of skin tone?? Yep, RED!! You know that color that your mom and mine forbade us from wearing as a child. Essie has an awesome color called "Apertif" that is a great red. Surprisingly enough, purple is also a universal color for all skin tones. I love purple and definitely rock OPI in "Siberian Nights."

Dark skin looks great with orange or blue polish. Check out Ginger + Liz in "Keep Me Interested" (Don't you love that name?? Post on the fab perlas, Ginger + Liz, coming soon.) which is an awesome shade of orange. Or if you prefer blue, Estee Lauder in Wild Blue is also hot. Dark-skinned perlas looking for a neutral color would also look fierce in Orly in "Hot Chocolate" (doesn't that just sound fierce?).

Medium skinned perlas look fab in ruby and sapphire tones. I recommend China Glaze in "Heart of Africa," if you prefer red. Or "Bermuda Breakaway," if you are interested in rocking a deep blue.

Lastly, those with fair skin can really rock the bright pinks and corals.  Essie in Mod Squad, if you like bright pink, is too cute. Or definitely check out Ginger + Liz in "Reality Check" if you like coral (really pretty). Pale pink neutrals always look great on fair skin and I would definitely recommend one of my ultimate faves, OPI in Coney Island Cotton Candy. That was actually the first OPI polish that I ever purchased- love, love, love it!

Above all, perlas wear what makes you feel pretty and confident. I hope this helps with your spring and summer polish planning. Let me know if you try any of my recos and please send pics to gotpearlsandpolish@gmail.com... Besos, P&P.

Polish Change: ORLY Green Apple

Oh what a difference a day makes, perlas! So I'm sorry but I could not take that yellow on my hands. I know that I said that I would give it a couple of days but I couldn't. I will say that I could definitely rock the yellow on my toes though... Instead of giving up completely on Orly, I decided to try another color that I bought last week. OMG! I love, love, love it! The color is called "Green Apple" and it's just as sweet and sour as it sounds. This green is the perfect shade to compliment my brown skin. It's not loud nor is it too green. It is a fabulous green for Spring. Rock it on your fingers or your toes. Check out the pics that I took:

Polish Change: ORLY Spark

So as much as I did not want to take off the OPI DS Reserve that I fell in love with, I decided, alas, it was time to move on. Yes, time for another polish change. This time, I wanted to do something a little less traditional that would be fab for the spring. During my trip to Sally's last week, I picked up three colors from Orly- two of which were non-traditional (for me anyway) springtime shades. The one that I decided to try today is called "Spark." In the bottle it looked so sunny and perfect for the beautiful day that we are experiencing in Atlanta right now.

Let me start off by saying that I was a little, well actually a lot, spoiled by the ease of application of the polish from the OPI Designer Series. So I had to readjust to the Orly polish and manage my expectations. I mean let's be real, there is a difference between a polish that costs $12.50 and one that costs $5.99... So I applied two coats of "Spark" to my nails (on top of my basecoat, of course). Honestly, although the color is definitely bright and springy, I probably could've used one more coat of Spark just to make it even more seamless and even. Then I applied my usual top coat. Here are the results:

Outdoor shot in the sunlight. Looks good, right? Peep how Orly Spark matches the flower (aka weeds) in my lawn.

Indoor shot. I wanted you to see the polish indoors. I took this pic without a flash.

It looks tame in both pics- its NOT. Don't be fooled. This nail polish is straight YELLOW- like Crayola.  If that's your thing, great, work it out, perla. Not really mine, but Im going to rock it for a couple of days to see what kind of feedback I receive. I am going to look for a bit more tame shade of yellow and get back to you all. Let me know if you have any recommendations...For the record, my nine year old loves the polish color. What do you think?...Besos, P&P.

Midday Moscato: Something For My Sorors

From time to time, I may have a post that I title "Midday Moscato." No, its not literally about the oh so refreshingly sweet wine that many enjoy as an afterwork libation (every day is a celebration, right?). It is merely a metaphor for a little relaxation in the middle of the day- a fabulous diversion. These posts are a midday "pick-me-up." It may be about a beautiful pearl piece that I stumbled across, some fab shade of polish that I picked up or even a fabulous young woman that I want to recognize. Just some middday fun....

So here's the first Midday Moscato- Are you looking for that just perfect shade of pink for your fingers? And the prettiest shade of green for your spring toes? With warm weather and loads of sunshine approaching, many are looking for new shades to break the monotony of the same old polish colors. Well, I have found the perfect pink and green combination for spring:

Pink- Two-Hour Lunch by Orly. I love the name of this polish. Don't we all want to take those?

Green- Tree Hugger by China Glaze. So I was a bit surprised by the name because it soooo does not remind me of a tree...much more like an apple (wink). Anyway, check out the pic below. And don't forget, if you go to Sally's and buy both of these, you can get another one FREE. Yay FREE!...Besos, P&P.

Too Young For Red

I planned to do a post related to polish and kids- just not this soon. But one of my fab sorors commented on "Perfectly Polished" saying that she recently had a conversation with her friends about that very subject. So here goes...Let me start by saying that I definitely wasn't the biggest nail polish fan growing up. I was way too rough on my hands playing basketball and volleyball. So it was not often that you saw any form of polish on my nails. However, it was made crystal clear to me by my mother that the color red was off limits and only for adults. It was like red said something about a person that was way too mature for a child. Like red was an invitation to something of which a child could take no part. Obviously red nails make a grown (and sexy) statement. What that exact statement is though, honestly I'm still not sure even though I won't let my daughter wear red either... Maybe I should ask my mom, she should know, after all she was the queen of reds...

So yesterday, my daughter and  I went to Sally's to pick up some polish (P&P PSA: Sally's has buy 2 get 1 free on all nailpolish including China Glaze and Orly!). So I told her that she could pick any color that she wanted for her "Spring Break Nails." She started looking at a variety of pinks- didn't even glance at the reds LOL. But she then moved on to brighter,  non-traditional colors like yellow, green and blue. Honestly, I knew that she was going to head that way- she's definitely a trendsetter. So was I surprised when she decided to put back the pink-hued nail polish to choose a royal blue shade called "Frostbite" by China Glaze? Not really... Would I have liked her to choose a different shade? Ummm, yeah!.. Did I try to talk her out of it? Absolutely!...But then I took a step back and reminded myself of three things: 1) It's Spring Break. Let the kid have some FUN!; 2) Let her express her individuality and trendsetter spirit; and 3) It's not RED. LOL...Besos, P&P.
